• When I heard from Jay that he was finally opening his own driving school, I could not have been happier for him. Our community—especially those immigrants applying for licenses for the very first time—is better served with Jay and his teaching methods. I was very nervous upon learning how to drive, but Jay’s enthusiasm and professionalism immediately put me at ease behind the wheel. His strategy was to teach me to be a defensive driver—someone who is always on the lookout for any potential hazards.

We provide a quality educational process

Shield driving school was developed from my passion for driving. As a former law enforcement officer, I know first-hand the issues and causes of many accidents you see on the road today. I finally can merge my law enforcement expertise and defensive driving training skills to provide and equip drivers with the knowledge they need to become safe, responsible, and defensive drivers.

Jay – “As a former police officer, I can share my personal stories and real life experiences I have encountered on the road. One of my goals it for parents to feel confident their teen has been well trained, not just to pass the test. Our roads are becoming more and more dangerous and challenging. Defensive skills and safety is of the utmost importance.
I was born in Havana, Cuba and raised in Bridgeport, CT. I moved to Meriden in 2000 and have been a resident here since. I am bilingual and culturally sensitive. I am one of the first instructors in Connecticut to teach the Drug and Alcohol classes in Spanish. I am thrilled I can share my expertise amongst a diverse population.”

What can you expect?

Our teen population requires special attention. Sending your teens on the road without the proper training can be frightening for many parents. You hear many stories daily on the devastating accidents that could have been avoided in the first place. I am a father of two children, I would not want my future teens on the road without being properly trained by an individual who has the skill level I possess.

  • Safe condition of the test vehicle.
  • Ability to properly secure the vehicle, adjust seat, seat belts, mirror, seat (“preparing to drive”).
  • Response to traffic control signs and signals, signaling, interaction with other motorists (yielding right-of-way, response to emergency vehicles).
  • Backing and parking.
  • Proficiency in basic driving skills such as turns.
  • Other driver maneuvers at the discretion of the inspector/license agent.

Great Experience

Shield driving school is a place where a man who has policed drivers all his life will share his educational and first hand experiences with his students. Jay Alvarez is an intelligent man and his years as a police officer I believe makes him ten times more insightful than the average driving instructor. - Daniel O.

We assign a specific instructor to each student, that instructor does all of your lessons with you. We think that level of continuity helps our students pass the driving test the first time!
